Our story.
Hi. We’re Juan & Sarah.
A Spaniard, a San Diegan, and one stubborn family recipe that took over our kitchen.

The Basque Baker didn't start with a business plan. It started with a birthday gift.
Long before that, it started in Spain. Juan grew up with this cheesecake — his grandmother's recipe, the one she made for birthdays, for family gatherings, for every occasion that mattered enough to put something special on the table. It was never written down for anyone outside the family. It was simply what we ate when there was something to celebrate.
In December 2024, during a trip to Spain, Sarah's brother Chris tried it for the first time. He fell in love with it on the spot. Watching someone from outside the family react that way to a recipe Juan had grown up with was the first time we thought of it as something more than a family tradition.
So when Chris's birthday came around back in San Diego, we knew what to make him. One cake, exactly the way Juan's grandmother had taught him — no shortcuts, nothing modernized. It was the most personal gift we could give.
Then Sarah took a photo of it and posted it.
That's the moment everything actually changed. Within twenty-four hours, seven people had asked to order one. Not someday — right then. What had lived inside one family for decades turned out to be something San Diego had been waiting for, and it happened because Sarah saw what the cake was before anyone else did.
That first cake is the one still known today as Abuela's Original, and it's where everything else began.
Today Juan bakes and Sarah runs everything that makes the baking possible. Neither half works without the other. Every cake is still made fresh, by hand, in small batches, exactly the way it was made in that kitchen in Spain — deeply caramelized on the outside, impossibly creamy inside.
It's still what we make when something matters. It just doesn't stay in the family anymore.
